Readerware VW is probably one of the most primitive DVD Collection programs we reviewed. Although all the DVD Collection software we reviewed is basically fancy database software, Readerware VW makes no attempt to hide its database roots. Not only is it one of the hardest DVD Collection programs to use, the interface is the most dated.
Readerware VW by default supports all major media types including DVD, Blu-ray and VHS. You can also add media by just typing in your media into the Format field.
Readerware’s automatic upload is done by an internet query from which you choose which online databases you want it to scrap. Choices include IMDB, Amazon, Barnes & Noble and more.
Readerware is the only DVD Collection software that would not allow us to automatically upload movies by title. You had to enter a UPC code to assign a query.
When we tested Readerware’s query we uploaded two barcodes into a queue and it took almost an entire minute to download the information. This is exceptionally longer than all the other DVD Collection software we reviewed.
We also found searching and filtering movies in our collection quite difficult, especially for those with zero understanding of how a traditional database works. Readerware’s search uses more traditional logic where you say indicate “title = word” and the software will look for matches.
For a user unfamiliar with traditional database management Readerware VW is extraordinarily difficult to use. Even for those with a working knowledge of DVD Collection software or database management Readerware’s learning curve is a steep.
The first thing we noticed is there are many unfamiliar symbols in the program that force you to randomly click to see what they do.
We have a feeling that Readerware VW is just a slightly modified version of their original book collection management program with very few elements changed, including that the default preview and query go to Barnes & Noble.
Readerware VW is very easy to install and is compatible with multiple OS platforms including Linux and Mac.
We do suggest you remain diligent when installing Readerware’s DVD Collection software because if you just click “OK” through the entire installation it will install a trial of their Book Collection and Music Collection software.
Considering how difficult Readerware VW is to use, we were glad to see they included decent help. The software includes a comprehensive user guide, support for specific screens, an online tutorial, and email support.
We did notice that although the user guide is well done, it is obviously written for books and kind of adapted for the movie database.
Although Readerware VW serves its purpose the software is obviously outdated, and very difficult to use. We’d like to see the software get a modern facelift and improve its user friendliness.
