To be honest, MyDVDs DVD Collection software isn’t really much to look at especially compared to the higher ranked software. Its interface is clunky and the navigation is blah but it is so easy to use it’s not hard to look past its physical flaws.
In addition it includes most of the basic functionality you’d expect from DVD Collection software.
Like the #1 DVD Collection product, DVD Profiler, MyDVDs only supports DVDs, Blu-ray and HD DVD. You cannot add additional media like VHS or VCD.
MyDVDs does support automatic upload but you can only search by title, you cannot search by barcode. Additionally, we were unsure where on the internet MyDVDs was sending its query. In some cases our titles were imported with complete information, other times it seemed incomplete missing a director or summary.
Like many DVD Collection software in this review MyDVDs does not include a “preview” screen when you are automatically uploading. This is particularly difficult if you are looking for a title that has been remade multiple times like King Kong.
All information you upload or input can easily be manually edited. Although MyDVDs doesn’t give you the largest selection of DVD details to add it provides the basics and it should be sufficient for most users.
We did notice that although you can import television series there is no place dedicated to episode selections; nor can you add additional genres like drama or comedy, they are just “TV.”
Searching for a movie is actually quite easy, you can simply browse by viewing the thumbnails or place filters on like genre, MPAA rating, personal rating or actor. A unique feature to MyDVDs is that it includes Academy Award categories as a genre.
MyDVDs also includes a loan manager, of sorts, where you can record who has borrowed your movie and on which date it was checked out.
