Movie Label, "TopTenREVIEWS Bronze Award" winner, is well on its way to becoming one of the heavy hitters in the DVD Collection software world. Using an interface similar to Office 2007 navigating the software is comfortable and unintimidating.
We really like the easy to use loan manager, customizable list view and simplistic, yet efficient search features. However, Movie Label is missing a few “extras” that gave the higher ranked products a slight edge.
Some features we would like seen added to Movie Label include a random select option and slightly better automatic import feature.
Standout Features:
Movie Label has a pretty extensive selection of media formats to choose from including DVD, Blu-ray and VHS. You can also add additional formats to your media selection like BetaMax (if you still have those).
DVD Upload
We found Movie Label’s automatic DVD upload process quick and relatively painless. You can search for movies by title or barcode. We noticed that Movie Label queries IMDB for all your disc information. This is great because it imports cast, plot, trivia and more.
We did notice that when you are importing make sure you select your media type and region code before adding your title to the download queue. This will help you get the right cover art and helps you avoid changing your media later in the process.
We really like that you can add multiple titles to your download queue then when you are ready you can batch download a whole host of titles into your collection.
As previously mentioned, Movie Label seems to download all of its disc information directly from IMDB. Although this works great for movies it is a little sketchy for television series especially if you are searching by title instead of barcode. We found that a few times the query would only return results for season one but options for two and three were missing. Additionally, the chances of downloading the wrong cover art goes up considerably.
We really don’t suggest trying to manually upload television series because there is no dialog box in the manual upload for episodes, however when you automatically import a television series the tab for episodes is added.
One feature we would like see expanded or improved upon is the IMDB preview. We were excited to see that if you right click on a title Movie Label included an option to preview the title’s IMDB webpage; however, we were unable to get this feature to work. So downloading some of your movies by title can be a bit of a crapshoot.
DVD Details
Like most DVD Collection software Movie Label can record tons of extra DVD details like cast, crew, summary, personal ratings and more. You can also add other personal information like the last time a title has been watched, the date it was purchased and even a link to the movie’s official homepage (or whichever link you would like to put there.)
One of our favorite Movie Label features is a byproduct of a program mistake. As mentioned in the previous section importing details from IMDB without a preview screen can be a little tricky, however, we found that if the software happens to download the wrong box image or if you’d prefer another you can upload your own or just right-click on the movie and choose to download cover art. Multiple box shots are made available.
Search Filters
It was interesting to find almost half the buttons and options available in Movie Label had something to do with search or filter. You can do a QuickFilter which is basically a toolbar that helps you search alphabetically; you can do a Common Search for titles, actors, genre or year; the Advanced Find uses multiple and/or logic filters to help you find more specific movies by media, genre, year and more; and finally, you can use the Advanced Sort and again use an and/or type logic to find movies with multiple features like title, then year, then runtime with them listed in ascending or descending order.
You can also easily access your loan manager from the left navigation.
Movie Label’s approach to sort, search and filter is different than most of the DVD Collection software we reviewed but once you get used to the simplify it is very easy to use. However, it might be more convenient to put all of these search options in one place instead of multiple selections in the tool bar.
We would also like to see them add a random select feature for some fun and flair.
Additional Features
We really like the ease and simplicity of Move Label’s loan manager, but we were slightly annoyed that it requires you save a name and phone number for your borrowers.
You can also track movies you want or ordered using a little icon at the bottom of your screen. Movie Label also incorporates a graph feature in which you can see the visual ratio of your movies by genre, year, studio and more. Useless, but fun.
Import/ Export
You can export Movie Label information in multiple formats including HTML, XML, TXT, and Excel. Importing is a little trickier. You can only import files from TXT files. But we like that Movie Label can search your computer for movies on your hard drive. That at least saves you from having to do it manually.
