Picture this: You have a group of friends over and you want to watch a movie. The only problem is trying to decide which movie to put in. While browsing the titles on the shelf is one way to decide, it isn't the most practical, especially if not all of your movies are on a disc. With Movie Collector, you can keep track all of your movies, whether they are digital or on a DVD or Blu-ray disc. With this DVD collection software, you can organize all of your videos and sort and search through them. Now when your friends come over you can easily pick a movie by genre, actor or even director.
Not only is organization important when working with movie collection software, but importing movie information is another key factor to consider. Movie Collector has a variety of ways to upload movie information including using a scanner or searching the internet. Something else that this application has is a comprehensive loan manager as well as multiple export options. You won't be disappointed with the Top Ten Reviews Gold Award winner.
One of the biggest hassles when working with videos is dealing with different media formats. There are Blu-ray discs, DVDs, VHS tapes and digital downloads. This application handles all major media formats and if you have other formats you want, you can always add new options. This means that every video you have can be cataloged and organized.
With Movie Collector, your upload options are almost limitless. You can have an unlimited number of databases, such as one for each person in the family, and an unlimited number of movies in each database. If you happen to have a title that the software's database doesn’t, or if you are uploading home movies, you can forgo automatic upload and manually enter all your DVD information.
You can automatically import your DVDs by title or barcode. Simply type in your movie’s title or barcode into the search field and click search. From there, Movie Collector will search their personal database to find matching entries. When you select a matching title, the software will import cover art, a summary, cast listing, episode guides and more for that title. In our tests, Movie Collector found almost any title we tried. We really like that you can preview your selected title and corresponding DVD details before importing. This feature is particularly helpful if you are uploading your DVDs by title and there are multiple movies with the same or similar title.
Movie Collector is also one of the only DVD collector applications we reviewed that could also import DVD information using an external scanner. However, you have to have the scanner software installed on your computer and it is suggested you use one sold by Movie Collector’s manufacturer, Collectorz.
Movie Collector’s DVD details are exhaustive. In addition to adding title, genre, cast and episode information, you can track personal information about your movie including where and when you purchased it. You can also add a personal rating and additional links to the movie’s website. You can even use the link feature to link to the movie’s trailer.
After your titles are uploaded, all details can be manually edited. You can also upload your own cover art or images. This is great for home movies or if you have a DVD case picture you’d prefer to use instead of what was originally imported. You can categorize movies in multiple ways including if it is currently in your collection, if you want it or if you’ve ordered it. You can even track if you’ve watched a title yet. Another feature we liked was the loan manager that tracks which titles have been loaned out, when they are due back and when they are actually returned.
Browsing for a movie with Movie Collector is really easy. The software defaults to a thumbnail view with disc details listed below. They also include a feature that randomly picks movies for you when you can’t decide what to watch. Just select a broad category, such as action, and the software will randomly select titles in the action folder.
Searching for specific titles or genres using Movie Collector is quite easy. The standard, built-in search filters include genre, file format, box set, series, actor and more. You can also build your own specific filters, such as “comedies on Blu-ray.” But you have to build these filters using their code and if you aren’t very tech-savvy, this might be a little intimidating.
In the last few versions of the software, the application has improved greatly. You can import databases from a text file and even from other DVD collection software applications. They have also added export options. This includes XML, TXT, iPod and HTML. And last but not least, you can always create a backup of your database.
Movie Collector is easy to use. Most software applications that use a database can be difficult to understand and quite cumbersome, but Movie Collector manages to avoid most of the common pitfalls and makes this software easy and fun to use. Movie Collector’s importing is fast. Our only concern is that when you upload titles automatically, there is nothing that confirms your upload was successful. We would like to see a queue of movies to upload that automatically updates as the movies are successfully uploaded.
We didn’t have any difficulties installing Movie Collector. The application is not very big and it can be downloaded in just a few minutes using a cable or DSL internet connection. We do want to remind you that you need to be connected to the internet to use the automatic upload feature and a dial-up connection is not recommended.
Movie Collector includes all the required and typical technical support options including a built-in user manual, email support, and online FAQs and user forums. We were a little disappointed when we contacted support through email because although our email was responded to in less than a day, the answer we were given wasn’t particularly detailed. Fortunately, most of your questions can be answered by consulting the user guide or online forums.
